Workers are upgrading and repairing sections of track that will be used by Amtrak high speed rail service. Much of the track that will be used is undergoing extensive modernization or has had parallel tracks installed.

The track renovation has taken the route out of service for almost a week but is due to go back into use within the next few days.

This image was shot in Alton, IL. near the overpass adjacent to the existing train station that will be replaced within the month. Rails are now mounted on concrete ties instead of wood and are held in place by a clip mechanism instead of spikes driven like a nail into the tie.
